We celebrated my parents’ fortieth wedding anniversary on the high seas with a cruise to Alaska—my fiftieth and final US state to visit! We set sail from Seattle and traveled through the Inside Passage to Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and Victoria. The Alaskan wind was just beginning to get it’s sharp, chilly autumnal edge, which invigorated the countless hours we spent strolling the decks and taking in the views. We sat in the hot tub as sailed through Glacier Bay, rode a train to the Yukon territory, hiked Mendenhall Glacier, and flew a seaplane to a salmon hatchery for an up-close glimpse of black bears catching fish. What a restorative, adventure-filled week it was!
After several years of traveling around Europe, this trip to Alaska reawakened my wanderlust for beautiful North America. I’m determined to see more of this immense, diverse, wild continent. Preferably on a boat with endless desserts and magic shows every night.
